Explanation:
The vascular supply of the meniscus in an adult is limited to the peripheral 10% to 30% (the red-red zone). Tears in this highly vascularized region, particularly acute, longitudinal, full-thickness tears measuring 1 to 2 cm, have the highest healing potential after arthroscopic repair. Tears in the avascular central region (white-white zone), complex or degenerative tears, horizontal cleavage tears, and tears in arthritic knees generally have a poor healing prognosis and are more often managed with partial meniscectomy.
